The more you capture (along with special collectibles along the way), the better your score. You'll almost always be moving forward, whether it's through bustling metropolises (watch out for those buses) or careening through dense forests, your major objective throughout is to follow the hearts on the path in front of you while avoiding the danger that surrounds you from every side.
Most of the game has our heroine chasing and breaking hearts - literally. There's a grace here that took my breath away, even when you're smashing a button to deliver that knock-out blow. It's almost subtle in a way, as if "Sayonara" wants you to be cognizant of how you look while you're moving or battling or dancing. You don't change lanes so much as glide across the level. Movement in the game has an unexpected grace to it that took me a few levels to figure out. (I reviewed the game on my iPhone via the Apple Arcade with a PlayStation 4 controller.) And while it never gets actually difficult, "Sayonara" isn't afraid to keep you on your toes. In effect, you're going to have to pay attention to what the game wants if you want to get the most out of it. Pulsing alongside its glorious soundtrack, "Sayonara" dives in and out of gaming genres with the elegance of a dancer. "Sayonara" may start out simple enough as a basic rhythm game, but it rapidly and unapologetically switches tracks faster than a nightclub's DJ. The breakneck pace rarely gives you enough time to consider just what it is you're doing. You battle - and kiss - those tarot cards-turned-girl gangs across 24 levels of ever-shifting dynamics. Other than some narration by Queen Latifah about some rogue tarot cards and how a woman's heartbreak has disrupted the order of everything, you're left to come to your own conclusions about the meaning of "Sayonara." Within minutes, the heroine, at first alone in her bedroom, transforms "Sailor Moon"-style and is thrown into the chaos - and I do mean chaos.
From its lo-fi, synthetic take on "Clair de Lune" to its surprisingly queer thematics to its melancholy opening and ending scenes, "Sayonara" doesn't really tell you a story about love rather than help you experience one.
One in which you get to ride a majestic buck while shooting lasers at giant mecha-wolves, delve into a "Space Invaders"-like virtual-reality world and go one-on-one with a giant dragon to save the universe.Īt its core, "Sayonara Wild Hearts" - developed by Simogo, a two-person team out of Sweden, and published by Annapurna Interactive - is about the joys and pains of love. A beautifully strange amalgamation of the magical girls of "Sailor Moon," the techno-neon-infused gameplay of "Rez" and the mysticism of the tarot deck, "Sayonara Wild Hearts" isn't so much a video game as a love song disguised as an interactive pop album. It's hard to describe what, exactly, "Sayonara Wild Hearts" is.
